A Proper Devonian at Hungerford Arcade!

Every whips ‘n while uz’l meet a desperd intr’estin gatfer in
thikky shop, out on a wazegoose an’ fawzy t’ ‘ave a look around at some
flibberty skriddicks.  Did anybody
understand that?  I said:  Every now and then we get a really
interesting old boy in the shop, who’s having a day out to hunt for trinkets
and other bits and pieces.

For the uninitiated, most of what I said there is
traditional Devonian dialect.  Having
said that I bet I got it terribly wrong.
I’m sure someone will let me know.

Anyway, back to the chap I mentioned before – Tich Scott is
a Devonian born and bred.  He can trace
his ancestors back in the county 400 years and is an award winning local
dialect speaker.  He is the operator of
Proper Dartmoor Tours, offering full day tours of Dartmoor in his luxury 6
seater Land Rover.
Three mugs!
While he was browsing through the Arcade for flibberty
skriddicks and the like, Tich found a musical cup depicting Widecombe Fair, an
event Tich attends every year.  The cup
was made probably around the 1930s or 40s by Crown Devon pottery and plays a
tune when you pick it up to have a drink.

Next time you’re down in Devon, make sure you look up Proper
Dartmoor Tours to explore Devon with a proper local!

Hungerford Arcade: 200 Years Since Waterloo

On days of national importance, the Union Jacks fly in Hungerford and today is no different.

Today marks the bicentenary of the Battle of Waterloo, which is considered to be one of the most important battles in British history.

Most of the fighting took place near to but not actually in the small Belgian town of Waterloo – The Duke of Wellington named the battle after the town in which he stayed that night.

To mark the 200th anniversary, more than 5000 enthusiasts in period costumes will re-enact the battle this weekend.

Clive Warner arrived in his gleaming XJS Celebration Edition with its diamond polished wheels.  A real head turner.

XJS owner, Clive sitting in his chair on the left
Roger Pigden and his wife, Karina brought along their treasured 1968 Renault 4.  Roger, who is on the committee of the West Berkshire Classic Vehicle Club, restored the car himself and it is pristine.  Roger and Karina have been all over Europe camping with the Renault 4 and have lots of tales to tell.

Hungerford Arcade: Bird boxes going cheep!

When we reserve an item for a customer we usually ask them “When will you be collecting it?”, not “When will you be moving in?”.

Mr and Mrs B. Tit have been living in The Vintage Garden (Unit 12) for a few months now.  They have two children who are incredibly noisy and from what I can see, they are always hungry.

The kids will be old enough to leave home soon and the parents will be glad of a well earned rest.  All in all they are nice neighbours and we’ll be sad to see them leave.

Hungerford Arcade Classic Vehicle Show

Mike & Collen……

Hungerford Arcade was very proud to once again welcome the Members of the West Berkshire Classic Vehicle Club and their wonderful vehicles.  The show was a huge success and had Hungerford buzzing!  A big thank you to Colleen & Mike for all their hard work in organising this fabulous event.

and their lovely Morris Marina

There is always a warm welcome for the Atwell Wilson Motor Museum in Calne, Wiltshire who, every year, bring along a classic car as a raffle prize. This year, the very lucky ticket holder will win this fabulous 1997 Mini Cooper!

Mini Cooper – Raffel Prize

A lovely couple came shopping at Hungerford Arcade, Jackie and Frank Gove from Bundanoon, New South Wales, Australia.  Arcade co-owner, Adrian Gilmour, brought them outside to see the cars, which they loved. I asked if I could take a picture of them in the stunning 1930’s Rolls Royce. As you can see, they kindly agreed.

I will leave you this evening with an iconic car which needs no introduction at all.  I will be back tomorrow, posting more stories and pictures from the show.  Hope you enjoy them.

Hungerford Arcade: A Perfect Match

In a place like Hungerford Arcade, you often don’t know what you want until you see it.  But when you see it, you have to have it!  This is exactly what happened when Alan Montague-Dennis came in with his two children, Grace and Freddie.

Alan came in to buy a top hat.  He knew exactly what he wanted and had already chosen it.  So that was quite straightforward.  He did pay part of the balance with two bottles of Bollinger, but that’s a different story altogether!

While he was trying his hat on and chatting to the desk staff, Grace and Freddie were exploring the shop.  After looking at a few bits and pieces and finding nothing that they particularly wanted, they were ready to go.  But just as they were leaving, they spotted the perfect item.  It was a china model of a whippet with a light brindle coat.  The spitting image of their own dog, Vera.  Dad took a bit of convincing, but he eventually caved as the kids assured him it was a once in a lifetime find.  And when we saw the two together, we all agreed that the match was perfect!
