We had a lovely couple come in to shop at the Arcade Peter and Joan Hill.  When we got chatting, Peter told us about the Windmill at West Blatchington where he and Joan have been working for 37 years as volunteers!  They do illustrated Mill talks and Travelogues.

The Windmill was built on a barn complex in c.1820.  The original machinery remains as the heart of a fascinating museum of milling.

THE GREAT HUNGERFORD CHRISTMAS SPECTACULAR

The Hungerford Town Band – Magnificent!
A huge crowd gathered as the band played Christmas music on the steps of the Town Hall which went down a treat!

The children get ready to sing standing on the other side of the Town Hall steps,
excitedly waiting for the Christmas lights to go on!

The children singing Christmas Carols so beautifully!

They’re on!!! The lights are on!!! The length and breadth of the High Street and Bridge Street
are spectacular!

Plenty of refreshment and food available outside Hungerford Arcade and next door
outside the Kitchen Monger and WOW! a Hog Roast!!!

As promised, here are some more of the vintage military vehicles with their proud owners who raised lots of money for the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal.

and is one of only three that
survive today.  

1943 Willys Jeep owned by Chris Freeman
Chris named his Jeep ‘Rosie’ as a tribute to his
mum.  Rosie was her betting name!

1942 Willys Jeep of the 82nd Air Bourne 307 Engineers Battalion 1.  
They, with this Jeep were the first ones on the Rhine crossing!

Roy is holding the original weapon that would have been
in this Jeep.  There is a special place on the dashboard
where it is kept .

This is an amazing 6 wheeled 
6 x 6 Dodge WC62 Weapons Carrier

After WWII, this vehicle went to the Norwegian School of Artillery
Andy Butler is now the proud owner and it is stationed at
the 444th Armoured Division Devizes

Hungerford Arcade Has A Big Christmas Tree

CHRISTMAS TREE
Everyone at Hungerford Arcade wish to give a very big thank you to Trevor Elliman and his daughter, Jess for the magnificent Christmas tree which they not only donated but erected at the garden entrance to the Arcade for us and our customers to enjoy.  Trevor and his lovely wife Jane are partners in their own company, The Vintage Garden and have a unit in the Arcade (unit 12) selling vintage tools and country items.

Trevor and Jane are members of the British Christmas Tree Growers Association.  Trevor grows trees of many different types and sizes. Jane makes beautiful handmade foliage wreaths – Garlands (mainly to order) – Mistletoe hand picked by them in Somerset. Daughter Jess, is a very clever, beautiful young lady and is a big success in the Young Farmers Association.  She is clever at school, is a great cook and loves being a part of her parents’ business.  One of the things that Jess loves to do is drive her dad’s tractor!

is very popular with the collectors of Dinky, Corgi and all die-cast cars etc. etc. along with Railway engines and all 
related parts.


Gary (Unit 28) is very popular with the collectors of Action Man figures.

Hungerford Arcade: Santa Comes To Town

THE SPECTACULAR HUNGERFORD
CHRISTMAS LIGHTS WILL BE SWITCHED ON AT 6.00 P.M.

We have been very excited this week at Hungerford Arcade because, this is it folks, the countdown to Christmas officially starts in Hungerford this Sunday, 1st December at 6.00 p.m. The celebratory event will start at around 5.00p.m and will go on until at least 6.30 p.m.  This year the great “Switch-On” will be performed by Lt. Col. Stefan Crossfield of 6 Close Support Battalion, Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers, a regiment having a very close bond with Hungerford.  

There will be music with the Hungerford Town Band; refreshments will be available and I am also reliably informed that there will be a Hog Roast if you are feeling a little peckish! The children from the local schools will be lining the streets with their family and friends for that magic moment – the great “Switch-On” and not forgetting the great man himself –
 Father Christmas!
 Hungerford is famed for its Christmas lights so do come along, the atmosphere is electric and one you will remember for a very long time!

Hungerford Arcade: Victorian Extravaganza 2013

FRIDAY, 13TH DECEMBER 5.00 PM – 9.00 PM

Christmas is well and truly here when the Victorian Extravaganza comes to town!  At 5.00 p.m. the ribbon will be cut hailing the start of the festivities.  The Pipe Band and Hungerford Town Band will strike up, there will be steam engines, fairground organ, big wheel, jugglers, stilt walkers and stalls from bridge street to the top of the High Street. Not forgetting the man himself, Father Christmas will be there.

Hungerford Arcade will stay open until 9.00 p.m. on the evening of the Victorian Extravaganza so do come along and see what is going on right on our door step

Hungerford Arcade: Walking With The Wounded

Just to keep you up to date with the Walking With The Wounded South Pole Challenge.  Prince Harry has arrived for the long trek of over 200 miles to the South Pole.  They are already experiencing temperatures of  -40 degrees.

HUNGERFORD ARCADE: ROYAL YACHT BRITANNIA

QUEEN’S ESCORT

Hungerford Arcade has had many Royal visitors and those connected with them.  However, it was a first to have the Queen’s Escort who served on the Royal Yacht Britannia.

David Bateman (now Lord David F.C. Bateman) joined the Royal Air Force in 1983 and served until 2008, serving some of that time aboard the Royal Yacht Britannia as the Queen’s Escort.  Britannia was his home and his country wherever she went in the world.  David and his wife, Dorothy even had their marriage Banns read on the Royal Yacht and her Majesty took a keen interest and kept up to date asking David if all is in order with the wedding preparations.

David served as a Medic in Afghanistan in 2006 and due to his injuries has reluctantly retired.

All of us at Hungerford Arcade send our very best wishes to Lord David and Lady Dorothy Bateman.

Because Britannia played such an important role in the public and private lives of the Royal Family for over four decades, it is no surprise that her decommissioning was a sad day for all.

HUNGERFORD ARCADE WAVE FAREWELL TO THE ANTARCTIC CHALLENGE TEAM

Walking With The Wounded Antarctic Challenge Team descended upon London’s Trafalgar Square today for the Virgin Money South Pole Allied Departure Event. A  whole host of media, press and guests  were invited to Trafalgar Square to join the Expedition Teams and to wish them all the very best before they depart for Cape Town on Sunday and then onto Novo Air Base next week.

It was a beautiful sunny day and everyone was in good spirits for the event.  Team Glenfiddich, Team Noom Coach and Team Soldier On were very busy speaking to the media and press who were very keen to find out more about the extraordinary Team Members and what the expedition means to them.

Honorary Team Member, Dominic West stood proudly with his Team, Team Soldier On, throughout the event.

Prince Harry ‘s arrival was the crescendo of the event as the Virgin Money Endeavour Trophy was revealed to the huge crowd.
